MOREHSHIN ALLAHYARI
THE ROMANTIC SELF-EXILES
13 April - 5 May 2012
(co-curated with Florence Ostende in collaboration with Dallas Contemporary and Dallas Biennale)

I ask you to show me the view of Tehran from your Balcony. You look back into the monitor: “ But remember? It’s hard to breath here. Darkness hides it all.” You still showed me the lights, the beautiful lights of Tehran which I only started to dream of after I left.

And so, haven’t we said enough? Our story... The story of one exiled nation; Self-exiled; In diaspora; Lost, nostalgic, displaced, split, broken, torn apart; In between. Places overlapped. Memories fading in and out. Bodies connecting or/and disconnecting. Emotions bitter yet romantic. Collective yet personal. Lives composed of unites or dimensions...

Media artist and an art activist, Morehshin Allahyari was born and raised in Iran, moving to the United States in 2007. Morehshin’s creative and research interest in social, political and cultural issues about Iran resulted in a number of collaborative intercultural art projects between Iran and US, which bring forth the dysfunctional dialogue between both cultures. Her most recent work focuses on censorship and self-exile, considering the positions of these who left Iran and the relationship to Iran’s political prisoners.

The Romantic Self-Exiles is a new body of work which explores relationships between self and home. It presents the life of those who live in-between, those who choose self-exile over a homeland in which they are not tolerated or welcome. In addition, it questions the romanticized aspect of such experiences by the self-exiled citizens. In The Romantic Self-Exiles, I use 3D animation, installation, narrative, text, and 16mm film to push the limits of real and unreal, memory and imagination, locality and universality, self-censorship and self- exile, time and space.
