LUDWIG SCHWARZ
Retrospective (1990 - 2014)
8 March - 5 April

Oliver Francis Gallery is super proud to present the first retrospective of Ludwig Schwarz. The work presented spans a 24 year period since Schwarz gained his MFA from the School of Visual Arts (1990) in NYC. For years, Schwarz has maintained a conceptual/absurd practice that has incorporated painting, sculpture, installation, video, performance and relational aesthetics. For his retrospective, a considerate/slightly rebellious/humorous (very Ludwig) approach was taken in the selection of work, bypassing easily ex(sus)pected work.

Entering into the studio of Ludwig Schwarz in Expo Park, a claustrophobic array of paintings and boxes occupy the available space in the initial room making it difficult to enter and subsequently awkward to pass through to the main portion of the studio where the works for the exhibition have been arranged. "I’m a hoarder, half the stuff i’m showing could very well be in the trash by now, so I’ve been thinking a bit about why objects, deemed art or not, continue to haunt me, and my storage. I must care about them, somewhat, or maybe they care about me for saving them. [sic]" - Ludwig Schwarz. The work (finished, salvaged or improvised) bears an emotional attitude that on first passing seam bleak, depressing and broken, but ultimately create a feeling of charming optimism that regards our relationships with people and things, how the two are parts of a whole and how studio, production and effort are inseparable from a life lived..

An archive of catalogs will accompany the exhibition for reference to past works and installations as well as a collection of hand-picked drawings, playing off language and form and a dry humor that is unique to Schwarz.
